Keynote Speaker: Aldrik Gierveld

Due to circumstances Christa Meindersma unfortunately had to cancel. However we are glad to welcome Aldrik Gierveld as the new keynote speaker of RiMUN 2011.

Aldrik Gierveld (MSc and LLM) is currently the Deputy Director United Nations and International Financial Institutions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DFV). DFVcoordinates the Dutch contribution to the UN and its specialized agencies, funds and programs (Global Fund, UNAIDS, UNICEFetc.). DFV looks at both the political dimension (eg in relation to the UN Security Council, General Assembly and the Dutch role as a contracting party to international courts/tribunals) as at the Development cooperation perspective. With regard to international financial institutions (IMF, World Bank Group),  the department focuses on development issues. In close cooperation with the Ministry of Finance DFV provides  instructions for the Dutch executive directors in Washington.

Aldrik started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990 when he began at the International Security Policy Department. Between 1993 and 1996 he served in Budapest as commercial secretary at the Netherlands Embassy. From 1996 to 2001 he worked at the European Integration Department. He headed the task force on the intergovernmental conference to revise the treaty on the European Union. Next he was posted at the Netherlands Embassy in Rome. In 2004 he was seconded to the Secretariat-General of the European Commission in Brussels for two years. He stayed in Brussels to serve as counselor and as Head of the Environment and Nature department at the Netherlands Permanent Representation to the EU. In 2010 he moved back to The Hague to take up his current position at the Ministry.

Guest Speaker: Elsa van de Loo

Elsa van de Loo, student International Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is the Dutch Youth Representative to the United Nations in 2010. In 2009 she did research on the privatization of water sources, and the access to water in Kenya. The injustices she witnessed there became her main focus during her year as Youth Representative. During this year she mainly focused on Millennium Development Goal 7: to ensure environmental sustainability. As Youth Representative she travelled through the Netherlands to start dialogues with Dutch youth and participated in several debates. Concludingly, Elsa represented the Netherlands in the General Assembly of the United Nations, where she held a speech on water and sanitation.

Social program

Besides intense debates and negotiations, RiMUN also provides an intense social program where you will be able to relax and get to know your fellow delegates and the staff. Below you can find the schedule for our exciting social program.

Friday

During the drinks for diplomacy you can have a relaxing drink and get to know your fellow committee members in a more informal way. From committee sessions we move together to the one and only student bar of Nijmegen Piecken, where there will be room enough to continue your negotiations or to hit the dance floor.

Saturday

The Committee dinners will give you a chance to relax and socialize with your committee members, Chairs and staff after a day of fierce debate. For the first 150 participants we arranged an exclusive dinner on the 'Pannenkoekenboot' (Pancake boat). While eating the typical Dutch pancakes you can enjoy the boat ride and the beautiful scenery of the Waal. Next to the Pancake boat, the nicest student restaurants have been selected.
After the lovely committee dinners, it is time to put on your dancing shoes for the cocktail party at Vivaldi’s! With the stunning view over the Waal, Vivaldi’s provides the perfect place to dance until the late hours.
